Field Notes

The ‘Dartford’ range from Japanese denim pioneers, FULLCOUNT, is steeped in history, and has a brilliant inspiration story. The brand have told that this range takes its influence from the train station platform where Mick Jagger met Kieth Richards on that fateful day in 1961. The Rock’nRoll legend is famed for the denim he wore back in the early days, and for this piece, the brand have tried to recreate the very same signs of wear that Sir Mick had on his original Type-II. A slight yellowing can be found throughout, as if this piece had been in storage for half a century, and deeper signs of wear and tear are evident than on other models, creating a beautifully authentic feel.

The Type-I is the denim jacket which started it all, and has endured for the best part of a century. This option from FULLCOUNT boasts plenty of original detailing, including a short-cut, boxy shape, a single chest pocket with button flap, sew down ‘knife pleats’ on the chest, and a custom manufactured cinch-back to adjust the shape. Buttoned cuffs have been included, along with a genuine leather patch, selvedge button plate, and punch-through copper rivets at the points of stress.

How to Wash
Step 1

When you’re ready to wash your jeans, button the fly and turn them inside out. Doing up the fly ensures the jeans maintain their shape, and turning them inside out avoids unwanted marks from the washing machine drum on the indigo.

Step 2

Place the jeans in your washing machine with neutral detergent, and set them on a non/low-spin wash at cold–20 degrees for raw, or up to 30 degrees for pre-washed. High spin may cause unwanted 'lightning fades', and washing too hot can cause excess shrinkage, so it’s important to follow these steps carefully!

Step 3

Once your jeans are done washing, hang them somewhere safe and allow them to air dry. Putting your jeans in a tumble dryer has a high chance of degrading the fabric and misshaping your jeans. Make sure wherever you hang them has proper drainage, as you’ll be expecting some indigo runoff.

FULLCOUNT

Essential heritage denim

A key member of the Osaka Five, FULLCOUNT is founder Mikiharu Tsujita’s vision of what the perfect denim brand should be. Using Zimbabwe cotton, vintage machinery, and a keen eye for detail, the brand has arguably become the leader of Japanese selvedge denim production. Straying slightly from direct reproduction, FULLCOUNT’s pieces — which include jeans, jackets, sweats, tees, and more — are fine tuned to fit seamlessly into modern wardrobes while retaining the quality and hardiness that Japanese manufacturing has become so renowned for.
