This 1942 ‘zippered deck jacket’ from Buzz Rickson’s is a beautifully and expertly crafted interpretation of a versatile garment which has stood the test of time. The simple boxy shape of this deck jacket gives an iconic vintage silhouette and this 42’ version has stuck very closely to the originals from that year, even forgoing the classic ‘USN’ stencil which we might expect to find on the back. The shell of this jacket is made up of a 100% corded cotton which is heavy and supple at the same time, and designed to gradually break in as you wear it.
The lining is cut from a high grade blanket wool which has been dyed a deep navy blue for historical correctness. Being the precursor to the hallowed N-1 deck jackets, this model features a zippered front, the zip being a nickel plated Talon model from 1942. This zip is then treated to a wind plate which protects the chest from arctic breezes. The cuffs, collar and waistband have all ben crafted using a high grade worsted wool, which provides a snug fit to protect from the cold. The underarms of this model have been ventilated using metallic grommet eyelets which allow for a comfortable breathability.
As one final touch of vintage detail, the manufacturing label on the inside has been woven on vintage subtle looms, and has a brilliant heritage feel. It is easy to see why this jacket remained so popular even after the Second World War, with solid and versatile design which has it all.
