The Front Rise

Front rise is the measurement from the crotch seam at the front of the pants to the top edge of the waistband. It determines where the trousers sit on the body and can influence the perceived waistline and overall fit.

Rise determines where the pants sit on your body and can create or alter where your perceived waistline sits. High-rise jeans sit near or above your natural waist. Low-rise jeans sit on or below the top of your hips. Mid-rise is anything in between, usually a few inches below your belly button. 

The Inseam

The inseam runs from the crotch seam down to the bottom hem along the inner leg. This measurement determines the length of the jeans and is key to achieving the right break at the ankle. Different inseam lengths can dramatically change how the jeans sit with shoes.

The Outseam

The outseam is the line of stitching running from the waistband down the outside of the leg to the hem. It helps define the silhouette and side profile of the jeans. High-quality denim often features flat-felled or double-stitched outseams for added strength and style.

The Pockets

Jeans typically feature five pockets — two front, two back, and a small coin pocket inside the right front pocket. Pocket placement and stitching can subtly change how jeans look and fit. High back pockets can make the seat appear lifted, while lower ones create a more relaxed look.

The Leg Opening

The leg opening (or hem) is the circumference at the bottom of the jeans. It defines the style — from wide and flared to slim and tapered. Choosing the right leg opening can balance your proportions and influence how the jeans pair with different shoes.
